Detours

Ladies and gentlemen, the Queen of Rock and Roll is back.

My first thoughts? The album needs some growing on, unlike C'mon C'mon and her Greatest Hits albums, both of which instantly dug their way into my heart like a pneumatic drill through soft butter. Wildflower was good too, albeit a bit depressing at times. Detours is a return to her old roots, apparently, with the return of the guy who made Tuesday Night Music Club a success.

What I can praise the album for is it's strong messages in its songs. She sings of war and peace, and what's generally wrong with the world today. Sure, it's pretentious for anyone to try and say just exactly what IS wrong, but it's a noble effort nonetheless.

God Bless This War, the opening track has a good melancholy vibe to it. The first verse has given me inspiration to write a short story, but more on that later. The guitar strings to it are pleasant to listen to as well. My personal favourite is 'Love Is Free'. It's got an infectious, happy vibe to it that puts a lil' swagger in my step. It's like the 'Live It Up' of Wildflower.

There's also a song called 'Peace Be Upon Us' that just made me go 'whoa'. Probably not for the tune of it, but for the duet with some guy who sings in Arabic, and with Sheryl Crow going 'Assalamualaikum' at a few points. Wows.

I love this album. It reflects how much of a hypocrite I am. I hate talks on politics and pretentious people trying to say that they know why the world is wrong, but she makes it seem so right somehow. So perhaps if Shahrin were to try and engage me in these conversations using a guitar, it might work better.
