Cocksucka!

Pardon the vulgar title. I'm just dealing with obsession right now. No, not for that, ew! Okay, so I brought that on myself. What I want to say is:


WATCH THIS.

It will leave you with a certain tendency to speak with a cowboy twang, and spurt out profanities at everyone that passes you in hallways, but it's good nonetheless. Just don't come in expecting a pleasant, happy drama. Hm, oxymoron, that. But it's not that this HBO miniseries is angsty or melancholic, what it is, I tell you, is smothered to the core with the three letter word : SIN. Which is part of what makes it so interesting. The idea of Deadwood is the town it was named after in Dakota back in the time of gunslingin' cowboys and Red Indians. It was supposed to be a place of gold, and a place where there was no law. People can happily kill each other in saloons and tavern brawls over a matter as simple as a lousy poker game. Prostitutes are everywhere, and sure, they're dirty, but they're there, and they know how to give the men a good time.

So throw in an out-of-place retired Sheriff who only wants to sell hardware goods now and make an honest living. That and another retired Sheriff who's one of the fastest gunslingers around with a gambling/alcohol problem. Add to the equation the owner of the local saloon who will be voicing a certain armored bear later next year- and you know how in the typical western type movies (not that you've probably seen any), the saloon owner is the guy who cleans glasses and cringes when people have gunfights in his bar? Not here. In fact, the guy is the main villain of the story- if anyone can really be distinguished as the actual 'villain'. Some politics and manipulation is involved, and they're of course, never above cheap dirty murder.

The characters are modelled around actual, real life people in the old west. Bill Hickock, Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane and Al Swearengen to name a few. Despite the startling degree of factuality (a lot of these things and events really happened) the following disclaimer appears at the end of the credits:

"With the sole exception of the well known historical events and persons portrayed, the characters and events depicted in this television series are fictional and any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental and unintentional."

Complicated, conspiracy theory with clean kills are fun to watch, of course, but Deadwood provides a refreshing honesty as to how nothing really is ever 'clean'. Check it out if you have the time, along with its sister-HBO-miniseries: Rome. Both are currently among my favourite TV shows, because of the historical content, and well, because they're not set in the here and now, providing sparks for well, stories of course. ^^

So watch Deadwood!

Or don't. Vhatewer. (shrugs) Now, I still have a Chem practical exam to get ready for. Hell of a time to fall in love with a series, huh?
